Hard Day, June 21

We departed Klu Bay feeling on top of the world! We went to Marguerite Bay where there is a dock and a 1 mile trail to a lake with good trout fishing. On arrival we found 3 boats anchored and 1 on the dock. Pretty small cove with a float plane landing path and a lot of stuff on the bottom. The wind was whipping up good. We dropped anchor and couldn’t get it to set. Jan didn’t like the location due to the float plane and the waves hitting us on the beam (side). So, we picked up anchor and moved out of the little cove and across the entrance thinking we could just dinghy over to the dock when we wanted to go for a walk. As we were leaving, the boat on the dock called us on the radio and said to come over – there was plenty of room and depth. Norm said there was too much wind and docking was going to be a nightmare! So . . across the inlet we drop the anchor again. Can’t get it to set – a lot of current! It’s early in the day – let’s abort this plan!

Not too far away and in the correct direction is Helm Bay, with a float. As we were attaching to the float the current and wind were crazy. As I’m looking around I’m realizing the fetch for this buoy is immense and so the wind might be hitting us all night. Bad location for this mooring ball. We got a line on and then . . .let’s just say it wasn’t pretty! But, we’re ok, the boat is ok and we’re all snugged down. No chance of putting the dinghy down and we won’t be coming back here.

In the morning we will return to Ketchikan, having completed the circumnavigation of Revillagigedo Island on the Behm Canal. We spent 9 nights at anchor. Time to refuel and clean up a bit.

I loved the book “Edgar and Lucy” by Victor Lodato!
